Best Loft Ladder Reviews

Last Updated on January 11, 2022

A loft ladder can give you quick and safe access to the upper levels of your home. If this is your first time searching for the perfect loft ladder or you’re looking for something better than the ladder you own, then this article is for you. We reviewed the top ladders of the year so you can select the best one for your home!

Our Top 3 Loft Ladder Picks
1. The Best Loft Ladder By Aurora
2. The Best 3-Lengths Loft Ladder By Youngman
3. The Best 2.6 Meter Loft Ladder By Youngman

Product Testing & Comparison

Each of these loft ladders comes with its own tradeoffs. The primary qualifiers we used to determine the cream of the crop are as follows:

  1. Load Capacity
  2. Maximum Height
  3. Adaptability

Depending on the loft you’re trying to install your new ladder in, your needs will change. The most important things in order, no matter what are that it can support you and anything you’re carrying, as well as being physically capable of reaching your loft.

That means that we ranked ladders with additional lengths and installation methods a bit higher than those with a single length.

And if you’re a petite person, max capacity isn’t really a concern. That would make choices like numbers 6 and 8 the best for you. They’re light, easy to carry, and can support small people without an issue. The problem with these comes in if you’re built like me – 2 metres tall and 110 kg on a good day. That makes carrying heavy boxes up to the loft much less feasible, which kinda renders the ladder obsolete, doesn’t it?

Your Loft Ladder Buying Guide

A loft ladder is a great way to get access to your loft without having a permanent staircase. As you have probably guessed, there are many loft ladders available – so how do you choose the best one for your home? Our guide contains all the most important tips to help you find your dream ladder.

Size

The most important thing to look for when purchasing a loft ladder is the overall dimensions. A typical loft ladder will start at 2.5 metres and reach up to 3 metres. To properly measure your ladder requirement dimensions, you need to start by measuring the loft hatch and leaving out about 1 metre of leeway starting from the loft floor.

Folded, Sliding or Concertina

Most loft ladders use a built-in mechanism that allows the product to compress. This saves space when you don’t need the ladder and it also allows for easier movement when you need to pull the ladder down. But which mechanism type is the best for you?

The most common loft ladder has a folding mechanism that retracts the ladder and folds it either on its integrated position or inside the hatch. Another type also retracts the ladder, but in a distinguishable vertical position that either stays on the brink of the hatch or a couple of metres below it. On the other hand, a concertina ladder is normally installed in line with the hatch, and to open it, you must use the provided pole that contains a hook.

Weight load

It’s essential to check the weight-bearing limits of a loft ladder before you purchase it. When overlooked, it can cause a great deal of damage and even injury. Bear in mind that a ladder’s weight load includes your body weight and anything that you happen to be carrying.

FAQ

Q: How do I choose a loft ladder?

A: Choosing a loft ladder begins with choosing a folding mechanism that suits your type of loft. Other important things to consider include size considerations (your loft, ladder area, and the ladder’s dimensions), weight load, ladder components (aluminium or wood) and other accessories such as railings, stewing poles, slip-resistant feet, and insulated hatches.

Q: How much does it cost to have a loft ladder fitted?

A: The cost usually depends on the materials of the ladder, the loft design and/or components, and whether it’s a DIY job or something best left to the professionals. On average, a standard two sectioned aluminium loft ladder that only needs to be fitted into an existing loft hatch takes about 2-3 hours and costs around £130 in labour and £120 in materials.
