The 10 Best Plinth Heater Reviews For UK Homes (2022)

Last Updated on April 17, 2022

A plinth heater is a great alternative to traditional radiators. They are particularly useful in smaller homes and they don’t use too much energy. Let’s see which heater is the best to keep your space warm and comfortable.

Our Top 3 Plinth Heater Picks
1. The Best Plinth Heater By Thermix
2. The Best Hydronic Plinth Heater By Smiths
3. The Best Plinth Heater For Larger Rooms By Bidex

Product Testing & Comparison

Our reviewer used a very specific set of guidelines to determine the truly best plinth heater for you:

  1. Consistency & speed of heating
  2. Heating capacity (size of room it can heat)
  3. Ease of use and installation

Our reviewer’s biggest guide for the truly best plinth heater is how consistently and quickly it can heat an average-sized kitchen. Each plinth heater on this list heated a medium-sized room quickly and didn’t vary in how quickly or how hot it heated.

The next determinant was how big of a room it could heat. The top 3 choices worked great in large rooms, while the next 7 varied in their ability to heat a large room. The final big part of what went where on our list was how easy it was to install and how simple it was to use. If it came with quality-of-life improvements like a remote control or thermostatic control, they rated higher than those that didn’t.

This heater’s discreet, high-quality design won it the top spot on our list.

This heater won the top spot thanks to its great features. Without wasting any more time, let’s see why this could be your new and warmest friend.

The discreet heater can fit easily under a kitchen cupboard or another small space. The operation of this unit is also very intelligent. The heater switches itself on and off to maintain the perfect temperature and also does not blow cold air until the central heating system’s water is 38 degrees Celsius.

Other great features include a fan booster that warms the room even more, easy installation, a user-friendly design, and durable construction.

Our reviewer found this to be a wonderful heater. It heated the (large) room quickly, efficiently, and didn’t draw too much power. It was easy to use and install, discreet, and generally a great product. While some reviews online found that it was a bit noisy, our reviewer couldn’t even hear it running.

Specifications:

  • Weight: 4 kg‎
  • Special Features: Kickspace heater, 5-year warranty

This quiet, versatile, and easily installed heater is just about the best we could find.

If you want to warm a room no bigger than 23 cubic metres, then this toasty heater can do the job. You simply plug it into your home’s central heating system and you’re good to go. As a bonus, it’s also energy-efficient so you don’t have to worry that the winter months will spike your power bill.

Several features make this the best hydronic plinth heater.

The lightweight and small item is easy to install in the kitchen or anywhere in the house where needed. Another reason why it’s a popular choice is the low noise level – a wonderful trait if you are noise sensitive or hate the sound of grating heaters. The durable design also means that you can look forward to years of service.

Our reviewer loved this device. It was quiet, easy to install, and simple to use. Its thermostatic switch worked perfectly, activating the fan when pipes heated up. Its one downside is that it doesn’t come with flexible connection pipes, making installation slightly more difficult, though still easy.

Pros

  • Easy to install.
  • Three heat settings.
  • Designed to connect and fit easily.
  • Low noise level.
  • A thermostatic switch automatically activates the fan when it detects heat in the pipes.

Cons

  • This unit does not come with flexible connection pipes.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions:‎ 64.5 x 41.3 x 14.2 cm
  • Weight: 7.4 kg‎
  • Special Features: 2 heat settings, boost mode, central heating compatible

Efficient, versatile, and fast-heating, our reviewer loved this central heating plinth.

This high-quality plinth heater is the best electric model because it trumps other heaters in one area that tends to irritate plinth owners. Too many can only heat a small area but this one is suitable for larger kitchens or rooms. Indeed, it produces enough heat to warm a 40-metre square room.

The great fan convector switches on and off automatically, staying in sync with the standard central heating system. This means that you do not have to manually adjust the heater the whole time. You can trust it to work on its own to keep the area warm.

Also, there are two heat settings, so if you need more power, just switch the fan to boost mode and the heater will gush out more hot air into the room. However, if you do not need the fan at all, you can also switch the power off manually. Overall, this is a useful and intuitive heater.

Our reviewer found this to be a quite simple device. It wasn’t anything complicated, which is both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, its easy to use and simple to install. On the other hand, it only has 2 heat settings and can be a bit noisy on “boost” mode. Otherwise, it performed quite admirably.

Pros

  • Easy to install and use.
  • Suitable for larger spaces.
  • Two heat settings.
  • Works through the central heating system.

Cons

  • Gets a little noisy in boost mode.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions:‎ 54 x 35.2 x 14.6 cm
  • Weight: 4.56 kg‎
  • Special Features: Automatic heat adjustment, low-noise model

This quiet heater will warm any small room efficiently and with minimal fuss.

Like many other small models, users typically install this heating unit against a plinth under a cupboard or cabinet. This product comes with an in-built thermostat that prevents the fan from blowing air until the water temperature in the central heating system gets above 38°C.

At that point, the heater turns on automatically and blows hot air into the room via its built-in heat exchanger. You can connect it to your standard central heating system and enjoy a quiet heater with different heat settings. This is another plinth heater that also senses, on its own, when to switch on or off to maintain a warm and comfortable room.

This was our reviewer’s favourite heater for small rooms, though she noted that it struggled with large rooms. Bedrooms and offices are great with this, though family and dining rooms require a stronger device. It’s energy-efficient, easy to use, installed discreetly, and surprisingly quiet.

Pros

  • Energy-efficient.
  • Discreet installation.
  • Automatic heat adjustments.
  • Minimal noise.

Cons

  • The heat output is not powerful enough for larger areas.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 48 x 22 x 12.5 cm
  • Special Features: 3 grille types, 3 power settings, simpe on/off switch, built in thermostat

This highly versatile plinth heater is truly great.

Are you tired of rattling plinth heaters? Then this stable unit is a good match for your battered nerves. The heater has 3 temperature settings but even the highest one will never cause the box to vibrate.

Besides this lovely quiet, you can also look forward to other features such as rubber feet and a thermostat that maintains your desired temperature and it also automatically cuts the power when things get too hot. This heater is noteworthy for the speed at which it works so if you detest a cold kitchen on a winter’s morning, this unit will surround you with warm air in no time.

This device was a hard one for our reviewer to place. On one hand, it’s extremely efficient, wildly quiet (with no vibrations in use), and thermostatically controlled, allowing easy use. On the other hand, its temperature settings are fixed and not adjustable. You’d better hope you want the kitchen at one of the three temperature settings, otherwise, you’ll be either too hot or cold.

Pros

  • Easy to operate.
  • Thermostatically controlled.
  • Rubber feet for stability.
  • No vibration.
  • Heats the kitchen quickly.

Cons

  • Temperature settings are not fluid. They are fixed at 800W, 1600W and 2400W.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 30 x 9.7 x 20 cm
  • Weight: 3 kg‎
  • Special Features: Forced air electric heater, 2 heat settings, timer and LCD display

This plinth heater is both efficient and easy to use – the best of both worlds!

So far, most of our top picks were hydronic heaters. If you prefer an electric heater instead, this stylish unit might appeal to you. Let’s have a look at its best features!

This heater has a 7-day timer with three-period settings for each day, an in-built room thermostat and a window sensor. there is also a temperature control panel that you can install at any height on the wall, saving you from stooping to manually adjust something on the heater itself.

The thermostat uses two heat settings: 950 watts and 1.9kw, enough to heat a 29 square metre room. This plinth heater comes in white colour, black colour or stainless steel front grille options.

While our reviewer wanted to love this plinth heater, there’s one major problem – the manual’s instructions aren’t accurate. If you cut your plinth to the size specified in the manual, you’ll have an improperly sized hole – which is no good. Otherwise, it’s easy to use, compact and quiet, and very efficient. If you’re willing to put in a bit of extra effort to install, this is a great option – especially for its cost, only £89.99 at the time of publication.

Pros

  • Quick and efficient heating.
  • Timer with a bright display.
  • Compact.
  • Works quietly.
  • 2 Heat settings.

Cons

  • The instructions in the manual are inaccurate and misleading. Do not cut your plinth according to the measurements prescribed in it.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 55 x 33 x 11 cm
  • Weight: 1 kg‎
  • Special Features: Remote control, 2 heat settings, low noise, central heating compatible

Despite its lack of a warning light, this thing is extremely easy to use.

If you love the Smiths brand, they also make electric plinth heaters and this one ranks among their best. So, what treats can you expect?

The heater is almost plug and play. You can easily connect this unit and it does not require a lot of space. Both features make it perfect if you have a small kitchen and hate overly complicated installations.

The built-in frost setting will automatically activate the fan when the temperature in the room drops below the lowest setting (this function keeps your pipework from getting frozen as well). You can also use this heater in summer by running the fan without any heat.

Our reviewer loved the remote control and low noise of this device. It heats up quickly and efficiently and connected to our reviewer’s central heating system without issue. Our reviewer’s big gripe is that for its cost (£210.86 at the time of publication), it should have some form of indicator for when it’s on. You shouldn’t need to start sweating to know that your plinth is on. At least we know it’s quiet, right?

Pros

  • Connects to your existing standard central heating system.
  • Heats up quickly.
  • A remote control.
  • Two heat settings.
  • A low noise level.

Cons

  • No warning light to let you know that it’s switched on.

Specifications:

  • Special Features: , 2-year warranty

Smart, simple, and stylish, this heater is sure to please.

This heater is suitable for those who want to stick to white decor for their kitchen (or elsewhere in the home). It is essentially a standard heater by this brand but let’s highlight those benefits!

Besides a stylish and clean appearance, you can also plug this unit directly into your central heating system. The fan has two speeds and minimal noise. But wherever you place it, the heater is unobtrusive and definitely not an eyesore.

There is no need to switch it on and off manually, either. The thermostat switch detects when hot water flows through the pipes, and then it automatically turns on the fan.

Our reviewer found this to be very middle-of-the-road. It’s easy to use, simple to install, and looks quite sharp. It also warms quite well and efficiently, even on low settings. On the other hand, it’s quite noisy for a device that boasts low-noise capability. The 2-year warranty makes this tempting, though.

Pros

  • Easy to install and use.
  • Looks smart and appealing.
  • Warms a room sufficiently, even on the lowest setting.

Cons

  • It’s a bit noisy.

Specifications:

  • Special Features: Manual off, highly efficient

Small and compact, this can fit just about anywhere.

This particular Bidex heater is very suitable for moderate size kitchens. The design allows you to tuck it under any kitchen cabinet measuring 500 mm wide. While the unit is discreet, any visible part will add class to the room (thanks to the white grill).

The heater produces enough warmth to heat a 27-cubic-metre room. Working with the central heating system, this is another model that automatically switches on and off as needed. The heater is also powerful enough to warm the room in very cold weather.

Our reviewer found this to be another middle-of-the-road device. It’s easy to use and install, and quite efficient, heating rooms even in the dead of winter. The other side of things is that it’s a bit loud and requires manual turning on/off, as it doesn’t come with a remote or easy monitor. It’s good for its price, though, sitting at only £116 at the time of publication.

Pros

  • Compact enough to fit under cupboards.
  • Efficient heating.
  • You can switch the fan off manually when you don’t need it.

Cons

  • A bit noisy.
  • No remote control.

Specifications:

  • Weight: 7.04 kg‎
  • Special Features: 2-year warranty, high heat output

While loud, this heater is incredibly effective – don’t sleep on it.

If you noticed that this heater looks identical to the other two, well done. Nothing wrong with your blinkers. However, there is a small difference that some people might prefer.

The front grille is stainless steel, making it exceptionally durable and strong. So if you want that extra protection for your heater, then this unit might be the way to go.

But just like the others, it shares quality features that include automatic heat control, working directly with your central heating system, and a compact size that doesn’t affect its powerful heating options.

Our reviewer found that this was a decent device with not much going for it to set itself apart from the others higher on this list. It’s easy to use, easy to install, and compact. It also comes with a 2-year warranty. But it’s quite noisy on the high setting and comes at a very average price.

Pros

  • Easy to fit due to flexible connectors.
  • Compact size.
  • Two heater speed settings.

Cons

  • Very noisy on the highest speed setting.

Your Plinth Heater Buying Guide

Plinth heaters are a great alternative if you do not have the space for a radiator. Our guide highlights the best tips to find the right heater for you.

Important Features to Consider Before Buying a plinth Heater

Plinth Heaters Buying Guide

Consider the size of your kitchen. You want to select a unit with the right output for your space.

Another thing you need to consider is the decibel level. How noisy is the device when at work?

Plinth heaters come in three forms – hydronic, electric and dual heaters. You must research which one is the best fit for your home.

Another consideration is the heat settings (how many options) and how fast a heater can warm the room.

FAQs

Q: Are plinth heaters any good?

A: Plinth heaters are not as powerful as radiators. But in the absence of one, they can effectively heat a small to medium room.

Q: How do hydronic plinth heaters work?

A: Hydronic refers to energy derived from water. Therefore, a hydronic plinth heater works with water- hot water. It uses an in-built heat exchanger to generate heat from the central heating system.

Q: Are plinth heaters noisy?

A: You must always check the decibel levels on your chosen heater. Some are exceptionally quiet but others are noisy, especially when they run on the highest fan setting.
