Fairy Non Bio Washing Powder Review

Overall Score

Ease of Use (60%)

Technical (40%)

Today we’re going to be taking a look at washing powder for laundry. Those of you who’ve read DreamyHome for a while know that we tend to favour hypoallergenic and sensitive skin features in products, and there’s a good reason. Even if most people will be okay with “regular” laundry soap, having naturally allergy-friendly soap is just… nice!

Let’s take a look at today’s product, Fairy Non Bio, and see if it stands up to its manufacturer’s claims. (Spoiler alert – it made our Best Washing Powder of 2022 Roundup.)

  • Price: £7-£10
  • Brand: Fairy
  • Pros: Sensitive skin-friendly, allergy-friendly, good with most stains
  • Cons: Leaves a residue if you use too much, struggles with some stains (without stain remover)
  • Amazon List: Fairy Non Bio WAshing Powder, Laundry Detergent

Now let’s see what our reviewer has to say, shall we?

Fairy Non Bio: The Ruling

Overall, our reviewer was quite a fan of Fairy Non Bio. While it does have a couple of minor weak spots, overall, it offers high-quality stain removal and value for an affordable price. And, perhaps more importantly, it’s extremely gentle on even the most sensitive of skin – allergies or not.

Let’s talk shop with our reviewer and see what makes Fairy Non Bio so good.

Product Testing & Comparison

Our reviewer used a specific set of guidelines to rank each and every bit of this device to ensure the most accurate testing possible. She examined:

  • Use
    • Stain Removal
    • Allergy/Skin Sensitivity
    • Smell & Fabric Softener
  • Technical
    • Weight, Number of Uses, & Dosage
    • Miscellaneous

Now let’s just get into it, we’ve got a lot to cover!

Fairy Non Bio: Use

First up is our general use section. This is super important, as you may guess, because this is the most impactful to whether or not this is worth replacing your daily detergent. Things like its ability to remove stains, its sensitive skin and allergy friendliness, and its actual smell are all important. Let’s see what the reviewer had to say, shall we?

Stain Removal

First up is stain removal. Our reviewer was quite rigorous in this section, as she knows how important it is to have a detergent that can properly remove any stain. Take a look below for a few photos of the before/after.

In order to test the quality of stain removal for Fairy Non Bio, our reviewer purposefully stained a white t-shirt with the following:

  1. Red wine
  2. Chocolate
  3. Hot Cocoa
  4. Tea
  5. Coffee
  6. Biro ink
  7. Felt-tipped pen ink

Without any stain remover added to the load, numbers 1, 3, and 5 were mostly removed, with a slightly visible remnant of the original stain. Numbers 2, 4, 6, and 7, on the other hand, were still very much stained.

Once stain remover was added to the load, the t-shirt only had biro ink and felt-tip pen stains left over, with the latter being barely noticeable.

Executive Summary: Fairy Non Bio can remove some stains, though it struggles with tougher stains such as ink even with stain remover. While it can and will remove a number of lighter stains, you may have to bleach whites to restore them.

Allergy/Skin Sensitivity

Next up is allergy and sensitive skin-friendliness. This is quite important, as Fairy Non Bio is actively marketed as being perfect for sensitive skin – such as that of babies and young children.

The good news is actually pretty abundant here. Our reviewer spoke to a number of mothers, each of whom either has only ever used Fairy Non Bio or had actively chosen to switch from other brands. Those that had switched brands found that their children’s skin cleared up tremendously and was generally more gentle on their skin.

Not a single person interviewed expressed any issues with rashes, skin dryness, or allergic reactions.

And Fairy Non Bio actually won* the British Allergy Foundation Allergy Seal of Approval (BAFASA).

*(This is the editor – Fairy Non Bio has actively stopped marketing their products as having received the BAFASA. This is due to the presence of methylisothiazolinone aka MI in their liquid and gel detergents. However, the powder is MI-free and quite good for sensitive skin.)

Executive Summary: The Fairy Non Bio laundry powder is a fantastic detergent for those with allergies and/or sensitive skin.

Smell & Fabric Softener

And finally, we come to the actual smell. We’re also going to address how well it works with fabric softener.

Our reviewer used just the Fairy Non Bio on a set of work clothes and then interviewed five people, including two mothers of young children:

  1. Both mothers found the smell of the clothes washed without fabric softener quite pleasant. They both noted that they already used Fairy Non Bio – mentioned in the name of review integrity.
  2. Two of the remaining adults don’t use Fairy Non Bio and said that it smellled, “lovely” and “fresh.”
  3. The final person said that, “It’s okay, but I prefer other brands.”

Overall, the smell – while subjective – seems to generally be pleasant and “clean-smelling” to most people. While your mileage may vary, our reviewer recommends it in terms of smell. She did note that both she and the mothers that regularly use it have gotten better results with Fairy fabric softener, which smells fantastic as well.

Executive Summary: Fairy Non Bio is a fantastic product for those who like a gentle, yet fresh, scent to their laundry powder. And when paired with Fairy fabric softener, things only get better. Four out of five people interviewed prefer Fairy in terms of scent, while one found it satisfactory but preferred another.

Fairy Non Bio: Technical

And now the fun bits – you know, raw numbers. Okay, while it may not be the most exciting section to read, things like weight, dosage, and the number of uses will all affect how much value you’re actually getting out of this detergent. Let’s take a look before we wrap for the day.

Weight, Number of Uses, Dosage, Miscellaneous

First, we have the really nitty-gritty stuff. Let’s jump right in:

  • Number of Uses: 40+ per container
  • Weight: 1.43 kg
  • Dosage: Recommended dosage is between 50-60 mL, depending on the size of the load.

Our reviewer washes between 2-4 loads of laundry per week, each using the same 1.43 kg container of detergent. She’s found that with a monthly usage of roughly 16 loads per month, it will last about four months, if not longer.

However, she did note that the recommended dosage actually leaves a residue on the drum, clothes, and glass washer door. When halved (using roughly 30 mL), this problem disappears, with the exception of 100% cotton bedding. Thus far, it’s unclear what is causing this or why, let alone how to fix it.

Nonetheless, assuming you use roughly half of the recommended dosage, you’ll get months of use out of a single box, without leaving the residue that comes with the recommended dosage. Our reviewer did note that the scoop pictured above didn’t come with the powder, so you’ll need to have one (she just stole it from another, older detergent).

Executive Summary: You can easily get 4 months of use out of this, varying depending on how large your family is. Use half the recommended dosage (30 instead of 60 mL) for best results.

While Fairy Non Bio does have its flaws, it’s a fantastic and affordable detergent that will last you for months. It will keep your clothes stain-free (with a little help) and smelling fresh as possible, all while being safe for those with sensitive skin and/or allergies.

Our reviewer highly recommends Fairy Non Bio, if only due to the ratio of value and quality to price.
