The 6 Best Meat Thermometer Reviews In The UK (2022)

Last Updated on April 17, 2022

Meat thermometers are one of the most useful, simple devices you’ll have as a home (or professional) cook.

They prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses or pathogens, ensure perfect doneness in your steak or roast every time, and generally make your life easier. While you can use a meat thermometer for a wide range of foods, it’s important that you note how wide their temperature range is – that will affect what else you can use them for. Now – let’s see what the best meat thermometer is this year, shall we?

Our Top 3 Meat Thermometer Picks
1. The Best Meat Thermometer By ThermoPro
2. The Best User-Friendly Meat Thermometer By Umedo
3. The Best Digital Meat Thermometer By Nixiukol

Product Testing & Comparison

Our reviewer used a specific set of guidelines to determine the best of the best for our list:

  1. Ease of use
  2. Accuracy
  3. Durability/long-term use

Primarily, we focused on ease of use and accuracy for each thermometer. This is important because they’re not complicated devices – they have one job, so they need to be effective and intuitively designed. Add in the importance of accurate temperatures in food safety, and these are by far the most important factors.

Finally, we looked for how durable and viable each thermometer was long-term. We want these to last you for a long time (regardless of how little each one may cost) – after all, waste is never a good thing. So devices that use rechargeable or replaceable batteries will always rank higher than those that don’t. Now – enough of what we want. Let’s see what’s best for you, shall we?

Modern and super easy to use, this is a fantastic meat thermometer.

The best meat thermometer that we reviewed was the ThermoPro TP17. This is a meat thermometer that’s designed for those who love to slow cook their food in a smoker, BBQ, or oven.

It comes with a wide range of handy little features including two probes with a 1-metre stainless steel mesh coating to allow easy placement without damaging the wiring. Additionally, we found that the backlit LCD display makes it incredibly easy to use in the early mornings or late evenings (those who smoke meats consistently know the struggle).

Our reviewer noted that the wide range of readable temperatures (-10-300 °C) made this thermometer super simple to use. It boasts accuracy to as little as a single degree, making it one of the most accurate devices on our list, as well. She did, however, note that it struggles to temp an oven or smoker – it’s only designed to temp meat.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Can be left in meat/smoker/BBQ
  • Sturdy
  • Efficient and fast.

Cons:

  • Can only temp meat – not the smoker or oven.

Energy-efficient and accurate, this is a perfect easy-use thermometer.

The second choice for our list was the waterproof instant-read meat thermometer from Umedo.

This thing is simple, yet quite effective. It boasts a safe temperature range from -50-300 °C, a backlit LCD display, and an alarm, among other things. Its battery is incredibly effective, especially in thanks to its automatic switch that turns the device on/off based on the probe position.

Our reviewer quite liked this. She found that it was extremely quick at getting a reading that’s accurate up to 3 degrees celsius and that it’s super simple to use. The alarm and backlit LCD ensure that you’ll never overcook a roast again! She did, however, note that once the battery dies, you’ll need to replace the device as you can’t purchase replacement batteries.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Energy-efficient
  • Accurate.

Cons:

  • Cannot buy replacement battery.

Versatile and far-reaching, this meat thermometer can read any cut you need.

Our third choice is quite the popular meat thermometer. The long probe thermometer from Nixiukol is not only one of our top choices, but an Amazon Choice winner.

It boasts a 3-second reading time and a temperature range from -50-300 °C. The LCD display is backlit, making it easy to read, and it comes with a second probe to ensure larger pieces of meat are properly temped.

Our reviewer loved this thing. She found that it was super simple to use, efficient, and overall a well-designed product. While some users found it hard to work, she stated that it was the most efficient and simple thermometer she’d reviewed (at the time).

Pros:

  • Efficient
  • Fast response

  • Alarm
  • Magnet

Cons:

  • Some people find it confusing to use – our reviewer didn’t.

This was another favourite of our reviewer. This thermometer from DOQAUS is a fantastic budget thermometer for those who want a basic yet effective meat thermometer.

Responding in 3 seconds with an automatic on/off to preserve the (irreplaceable) battery makes it super simple to use. Add in the wide range of useable temperatures (-50-300 °C), and this is a steal for only £9.99 at the time of publication.

Our reviewer found that this was one of the best meat thermometers that she’d reviewed if only due to the value it offers for such a low price. It’s simple, effective, and responds very quickly. She did note that the battery can’t be replaced when it dies, meaning you’ll need to buy a new one. Luckily, hers is still kicking after 6 months of regular use.

Pros:

  • Effective
  • Fast
  • Energy-efficient
  • Easy to use

Cons:

  • Battery can’t be replaced

Specifications:

  • Upper Temp. Rating: 300 °C
  • Batteries: 1 LR44 battery (included)
  • Special Features: Instant read, auto-off

For those seeking an affordable professional-grade meat thermometer, this is the choice.

ThermoPro has been the brand of choice in every (15+) kitchen I’ve ever worked in professionally.

Our reviewer had a few minor notes but found that for the value and performance, there’s really no better option (other than maybe #4).

That’s because this thing is idiot-proof – you simply insert and automatically receive an accurate reading within 3 seconds. It’s accurate to within .5 degrees Celcius, and can reach the same ranges as the others in this list – that is to say -50-300 °C.

Our reviewer did, however, note that this is strictly for meat. While it can be used to temp some other things (milk, soup, etc.) it couldn’t consistently temp the extremely hot temps of heated sugars and fats. That means it should be used as a “general purpose” thermometer, rather than a “Jack-of-all-trades.” Nonetheless, this was a favourite of the entire DreamyHome staff, and for good reason.

Pros:

  • Extremely accurate
  • Easy to use
  • Effective

Cons:

  • Can’t temp super high-heat mixtures (it’s not a candy thermometer)

Specifications:

  • Upper Temp. Rating: -45ºC to 200ºC
  • Batteries: 1 LR44 battery included
  • Special Features: LCD display, high-accuracy

The last device on our list, the Heston Blumenthal Precision Thermometer is extremely basic – but quite effective.

Our reviewer found that it was so simple that it is entirely idiot-proofed, as well as being incredibly easy to use. Simply pop off the cover, insert, and measure. You’ll get a response within 3 seconds that’s accurate up to .1 degree Celcius.

However, our reviewer also noted that this thermometer (for all of its good sides) is effective in a much smaller range of temperatures. So while it’s advertised as a confectionary, meat, and “everything else” thermometer, it really can’t handle the high heats of true confectionary. Otherwise, though, it’s a fantastic meat thermometer.

Pros:

  • Simple
  • Effective
  • Efficient

Cons:

  • Small effective range

Meat Thermometers Buying Guide

There is no denying it; meat, both red and white, is delicious – but it should be cooked properly. Whether you are using a deep fat fryersous vide machine, a mini oven, or a portable induction hob using induction pans; you should not give room for pathogens to survive.

Check that the temperature of the thickest and innermost part of the meat is safe. A meat thermometer will provide accurate readings. It will also help in timing any of your confectionary projects (jam, honeycomb, other heated sugars).

While many thermometers can be used for meat, it’s generally best to seek specialised equipment when it comes to food safety.

How Do They Work

Food thermometers work by showing you the internal temperature of whatever you are cooking. To do this, you probe the food, ideally into the centre. Leave the probe in until you reach a non-changing reading, and that’s it! Easy, right?

What Are The Different Types?

There are a few different types of thermometers. From the more traditional version to digital models, there are a few options to select when it comes to the best meat thermometers. While the type of measuring will affect the accuracy and timeliness of any reading, anything with a probe can be used as a meat thermometer.

Traditional Liquid Thermometers

These are most similar to the thermometer you might be used to using in your home to check for a fever or maybe even checking the temperature outdoors. These thermometers used to contain mercury but now they more commonly contain galinstan, which is a safe alternative.

The advantage of traditional liquid thermometers is that they are some of the more affordable types of thermometers and they can be the best starting point when it comes to working with boiling water and sugar solutions. The disadvantage of these types of thermometers is that they can be a little slower than their digital counterparts.

It is also worth noting that these thermometers can’t touch the bottom of the pan during cooking, as this can cause the thermometer to malfunction or even break. More frequent care and calibration is required for them than for their digital counterparts.

Coil Spring Thermometers

These work by making use of a bimetal spring as a temperature sensing element that unravels as it heats. This then moves an arm on a dial that clearly indicates the temperature and helps you to see what stage of the cooking process you are at. Like the traditional liquid thermometer, this is a slower one than a digital thermometer, but it is a super option for those that are looking for the best meat thermometers.

Digital Thermometers

Digital meat thermometers are by far the most accurate types of meat thermometers. They produce accurate temperature readings in a quick time frame and some even have the ability to make a sound when the temperature reaches a certain point.

Digital units are the most expensive ones so make sure that you read lots of meat thermometer reviews and tests to make sure that you are getting a tested thermometer that is worth the money. They have display panels that show the result of the readings from the instant-read thermometers. The display comes in various sizes depending on the particular thermometer.

Leave-In Thermometers

This is a subtype of thermometer that you’ll find is extremely common with people who consistently do roasts or large pieces of meat in an oven or smoker. They’re generally more modern, digital thermometers (sometimes even having Bluetooth or an app!) that have a special coating along the wire for each probe, allowing the probe to remain in the meat during the entire duration of cooking.

This allows a consistent, timely reading for as long as is needed. In fact, I often use our #1 choice while smoking pork butts, as they will stay in for 12+ hours until they reach the temperature I’m aiming for. If you primarily cook on a hob or with pots/pans rather than a BBQ, oven, or smoker, then this won’t help you enough to be worth the often higher cost.

What Features To Look Out For When Buying These Products

When thinking about getting into candies making or anything with sugar solutions, safety is always an important consideration and that is where a clip comes in. Having a clip on your meat thermometer means that you can keep your hands away from the mixture and has the added advantage of helping you to keep a better eye on the temperature, leading to a more accurate process.

How These Products Can Be Cleaned

Perhaps the most important factor of a thermometer (beyond its actual function) is how easy it is to clean. You’re temping food to prevent transmission of foodborne illnesses, so cleaning the probe is vital to the thermometer doing its job properly. If it’s hard to clean or can’t be cleaned, you’ll simply provide an easy path for bacteria into your food.

Power Source

This is obviously not something you need to think about with an analogue thermometer, but if you are considering a digital version it is worth checking to see what type of battery it is powered by and how often the batteries need replacement due to its performance.
