Product Testing & Review

Our reviewer followed an extremely strict set of guidelines to ensure this product was tested for the most vital factors and uses. Her specific focuses are listed below:

  • Use
    • Ease of Use & Cleaning
    • Grind & Ergonomics
  • Technical
    • Dimensions, Weight, Sound & Miscellaneous

Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set: Use

This is by far the most important section of any kitchen gadget review. If it’s hard to use, difficult to clean, or has other issues that make it difficult to use, you’re going to have more issues than we want in the kitchen – that is to say, no problems.

So let’s see if Modetro actually made a good salt & pepper mill, shall we?

Ease of Use & Cleaning

Cleaning the Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set

First up is ease of use and cleaning. In terms of general use, our reviewer found that it’s incredibly easy to use. They operate quite simply – though it is important to note that these are manual grinders. If you’re looking for a one-handed electric grinder, these will not meet that purpose. However, they’re extremely easy to use and dispense a surprising amount of salt and pepper with a single twist.

This makes it super simple to use them, as one twist ground 2-3 times as much salt and pepper as some other, lesser manual grinders that we reviewed.

As for cleaning, these are quite simple to clean. They’re shaped somewhat like jam jars, which while for some may be offputting, makes it super simple to open up and rinse. And as they’re non-electric, you don’t need to worry about damaging the internals while cleaning. While we wouldn’t recommend that you put them in the dishwasher, you really won’t need to – it takes a single wipe with a damp cloth and you’re back in the game.

Executive Summary: The Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set is incredibly easy to both use and clean. Use requires a few simple twists, while cleaning is as simple as unscrewing the cover and rinsing the interior.

Grind & Ergonomics

Grinding Salt

The Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set is both consistent and well designed from an ergonomics standpoint. The large top makes it easy to get a grip and twist, and the amount you get with each twist prevents the old-school issue of grinding pepper for 40-50 twists or “until your wrist hurts too much to go on!” as my old chef (boss) used to tell me.

The grind consistency is near-perfect – it doesn’t turn salt into a fine powder, and keeps pepper in large enough bits that you’ll be able to see it. While some people may dislike this, I’ve found that I prefer to see how much salt and pepper I’m putting in, rather than measuring it out. After all, you measure black pepper with your heart, not a tablespoon.

If you ask our reviewer, though, she’ll say that she preferred an electric ginder, like the one we just reviewed. This is because it allows her two things – she’s able to use it one-handed, and gets a much more fine grind, and does so consistently.

Nonetheless, this is a fantastic, affordable set of grinders – assuming you don’t mind a little bit of manual labour. Add in that peppercorns don’t get stuck in the grinding mechanism, and you’ve got a well-made grinder for just about any situation.

Executive Summary: Our reviewer found that the Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set was well made and easy to use. It grinds consistently to an in-between consistency of powder and coarse bits. It fits well into just about anyone’s hands, and grinds so much that you likely won’t have to deal with a sore wrist once finished grinding. And a nice little bonus – nothing gets stuck in the grinder!

Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set: Technical

And now we get to the part that is everyone’s favourite – you know, numbers. Okay, the nitty-gritty details and features of this grinder may not be the most interesting, but they’ll severely impact how your experience with this thing goes. Let’s get right into things and we can wrap for the day. First up is the super interesting stuff – dimensions, weight, and sound.

Dimensions, Weight, Sound, & Miscellaneous

Sound Testing

Okay – let’s talk about how big this thing is. Our reviewer measured it out to ensure it meets the manufacturer specifications:

  • Height: 5.5 inches (13.9 cm)
  • Depth (Top): 2.7 inches (6.9 cm)
  • Depth (Bottom): 3.2 inches (8.1 cm)
  • Volume: 135 mL (each)
  • Weight (Empty): 253 grams
  • Weight (Salt): 432 grams
  • Weight (Pepper): 346 grams

As for sound, our reviewer tested the grinder with a decibel meter when grinding both salt and pepper. When grinding pepper, the mill creates 66.6 decibels, while grinding salt creates 73.3 decibels. This is in between the noise level of an average conversation and that of a hairdryer or vacuum (though a bit quieter than that).

Grinding Tray

The grinders also come with a tray that measured out to (H x L x D) 1 x 6.3 x 4.2 inches.

As for filling the things, our reviewer had no issues. You’d be surprised how many spice mills are actually quite difficult to fill – luckily, this one is quite straightforward. You simply unscrew the top and pour in peppercorns or salt as needed – no hassle, no fuss, just easy.

Executive Summary: The Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set is large enough to hold a month’s worth of salt and pepper and is relatively quiet (measuring around the same noise level as an average conversation). It’s also quite simple to fill, ensuring you won’t struggle with this guy over the coming years.

Conclusion

Our reviewer was quite a fan of this grinder set. While the Modetro Salt and Pepper Grinder Set isn’t electric, it operates with extreme ease and is super simple to fill, clean, and just use. While you won’t get the extreme ease of an electric grinder, I honestly believe you won’t even notice – these things are awesome.
